Size of the Industry and Trends

The Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) is a trade organization for hobby and crafting retailers and wholesalers. In the most recent study regarding beading in December, 2004 statistics showed that beading is the fastest-growing sector among young people under age 35. For the second year in a row, beading had the greatest increase among all hobby/craft sectors, with 1 in 3 hobbyists/crafters now working with beads in their projects.

Also, with more time on their hands Baby Boomers are tapping into their creativity with handmade jewelry and handmade gifts. Interweave Press reports that the number of beading enthusiasts is growing 10%-30% annually; there are 1,800 independent bead supply stores in the United States, representing 41% growth since 1997, and growing steadily.

Retailer chains have got into the bead business in a large way which has helped to build the industry awareness among casual, serious, and income-generating crafters. Nurses and other professionals are also very involved in beading due to the stress relief they find from creating intricate bead, and particularly seed bead projects.
